The rule of the open web is much simpler: you own your content if it’s on your domain name. That’s why I have my microblog posts here on manton.org and with their own RSS feed.

Pretty good idea, but I haven’t brought up the time to implement that myself, and so in the meantime my proper website doesn’t have a lot of blog posts, because I didn’t want to ‘spam’ it like my old sites with micro-blurbs. But I’ve been thinking about this again lately.

And while I love pants I’m not sure I’ll just go my own way again and have my most important content in my own system, just because I apparently prefer flexibility. On the other hand I might think about mixing #pants and my own system, because for small stuff and discussions… pants is good. I’m just worried about the integration, canonical urls, etc.pp

I’ve also been archiving my tweets lately.

Stelle grade fest, dass ein “Back to your #pants” button hilfreich wäre.

MUAHAHAHA.

#twitter analysis for July 2014

#twitter analysis for July 2014

Because I think it doesn’t justify a big blog post, and I’ve been thinking about my use of communication mediums again lately, I am trying to analyze my twitter network.

  • I was following 195 accounts
  • 110 I tagged “I know them personally”
  • 16 I tagged “had more or less extensive talks via irc, jabber, mail, twitter with them”
  • 1 is a dog (of one of the 110) - at least I think so
  • 19x “What they write I find interesting” - would mostly prefer their RSS feed, though
  • 1 celebrity
  • 5 projects/novelty accounts (mostly run by the 110 or the 16)
  • 5 companies, organizations and meetups I am/was associated with
  • 10 projects, conferences, etc I find interesting (1 of them very spammy, but no proper website, meh)
  • 2 pure news accounts (may switch to RSS if possible)
  • 10 for pure entertainment
  • 16 accounts eliminated while sorting this list
  • there might be an off-by-one error in this list…
  • I am following 179 accounts now

So glad I can edit this post.
Compared to this, my #pants network:

  • met: 1
  • irc/mail/etc: 3
  • my own accounts: 2

The first 2 *.computer and the first *.re domain I’ve seen in the wild (I am apparently just using the boring part of the web) - and that with < 20 users on #pants.

So far there’s 2 types of #pants users - the ones who use pants.*.tld and the ones who whip out a weird domain name out of nowhere.

Aha, a bug in the markdown rendering it seems. I can’t use 2 * in one line, even without spaces.

Today I want to talk a bit about moonwalk - an alternative implementation of the pants “protocol”.

First I just checked the pants commits after I accidentally found it, then decided it would be more fun to code an “API” compatible version. In Lua, because why not?

So ever since I am following progress and reimplementing some features (for now you can’t post in moonwalk, need to use SQL for that) but I can display, ping and hopefully soon do more stuff.

I’m documenting what I’m doing in the unofficial spec that I let hmans doublecheck from time to time. He said it’s going to be decentralized, serves him right :P

A few observations:

  • lua rocks
  • classic web development with CRUD and user facing stuff not so much
  • there are some frameworks, lapis looks most promising
  • I’m still writing my own stuff
  • there is really fancy stuff and really weird stuff (ngx_postgres, looking at you)
  • It’s probably not much fun to setup right now
